Comic Popera Sirens of Song Set to Captivate Logan

10 July 2006

Be dazzled by the beautiful and entertaining Sirens of Song, Jacqueline Mabardi and Shelli Gilholme, who portray the sexy divas Barbara Seville and Carmen Geddit in glamorous costumes by Australia’s Hall of Fame designer, Richard de Chazal at the Logan Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 11 July at 11am

Labelled as ‘Opera Stars’ by the Courier Mail, these divas will amaze you with their Queensland Conservatorium trained voices, humour and versatility as they bring to you pOpera (the cross-over of classical music with popular melodies) - opera, jazz, Beatles songs, 70s disco and show tunes – all accompanied by outstanding pianist and tenor, Sydney’s Glenn Amer who was here recently with the sellout Irish Spectacular.

This second show in the fourth series of the Mayor and Mayoress’ Merry Melodies features Jacqueline Mabardi - recently returned from several years performing in Berlin - who currently  has the starring role of Roselinda in Die Fledermaus for Opera Queensland. Not only has she worked in opera, musical theatre and dance but the beautiful Miss M also began life as a model and to this day retains her poise and grace
on the Sirens Stage!

Shelli Gilholme, after studying at the Queensland Conservatorium and later in Manchester, UK, Shelli joined Opera Queensland and performed Nannetta in Falstaff, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Giannetta in L’Elisir d’amore, Yum-Yum in The Mikado, Papagena in The Magic Flute and Ensemble in Sweeney Todd.  She was a soloist in the opening ceremony of the Goodwill Games in 2001, which is where she got her first taste of a lush Richard de Chazal creation! In 2002 she also made her Sydney debut with Pinchgut Opera as Cupid in Semele which was broadcast on ABCFM and released on ABC Classics.

The Sirens concept is the brainwave of soprano Tarita Botsman who is determined to make opera accessible, funny, glamorous and affordable to everyone and who will be returning from engagements in Europe the last six months to direct this Comic pOpera. Recent appearances that the Sirens of Song have made have included the Italian-Australian Festival in Ingham in North Queensland, the South Australian Premier’s Clipsal 500 Ball in Adelaide, Hyundai China Conference at Jupiter’s Casino and the IBM Annual Ball at the Versace Hotel.
