Dags and Divas World Premier. Sirens of Song and X-Collective shine.
February 2007
Sirens of Song Management have thrown themselves into 2007 with the World Premier of Dags and Divas, an exciting new cabaret show, a collaboration between X-Collective – the unofficial cabaret ensemble of The Queensland Orchestra, Sirens of Song’s operatic duo starring Jacqueline Mabardi and Shelli Gilholme and the amazing versatile talents of musical theatre singer Leisa Barry-Smith. It is a hilarious journey as they attempt to create a new version of "Cinderella-A Woman for the 21st Century".
Having launched the production to a sellout audience at the ABC Ferry Rd studios in Brisbane, Dags and Divas, then toured to Sydney’s Mardi Gras Festival and a series of performances at the Seymour Centre. Every performance received standing ovations and there has been an invitation to return for a week long season in Sydney - we will keep you posted!
Dags and Divas showcases eighteen of Australia’s elite classical musicians and opera stars, as they effortlessly cross-over into the world of cool jazz, Broadway musicals, techno and camp comedy. Featuring gowns by award winning designer Richard de Chazal and spectacular costumes by ex-Les Girls performer Lisa White, Dags & Divas is a fun filled night of sequins and surprises; light and laughter. With one classic song after another, audiences left the show with their cheeks aching and their toes tapping. The orchestra on stage came to life with each of the instrumentalists in the ensemble not only playing instruments but each taking on their own acting and, in some cases, singing roles to create an unbelievable night of pantomime, fun and the unexpected.
Here is how the reviewer Graham Rushton of Stage Whispers recalled the evening: “The comedy and music flowed throughout the entire two and half hours. The standing ovation at the end left this reviewer and the audience wanting more, more, more…What a show!!! What talent!!! This has got to be one of the most entertaining nights out at the theatre you could ever experience. Think of everything you have seen in the past, then think again, go see Dags and Divas for the happiest night of you life. Watch for the bagpipes sequence.”
If you missed Dags and Divas or you’re aching to see it again we have had expressions of interest from festivals and venues as well as listing the production on Long Paddock (the national touring forum), so when you see it coming to a venue near you, don’t miss out on a great night, tell your friends and grab a ticket!
