Linda Barcan has 18 years’ professional performance experience in recital, cabaret, opera, and musical theatre. She trained in Sydney, France and Germany, and holds an LMusA in singing performance. She studied voice and drama at NIDA, Australia’s most prestigious acting institution.
Linda’s numerous awards include a Conservatorium Scholarship, a Music Teacher’s Association Scholarship and a CONDA award for Best Actress in a Musical. A French Government Scholarship enabled Linda to further her vocal studies in France, leading to engagements with the Lyon Opera Company.
Since then, Linda has appeared in opera, musical theatre, concert, recital and cabaret on the Australian and international stages. She has worked extensively for Opera Australia as a principal, understudy and ensemble player. Her professional performance credits amount to well over 1,000 performances on the opera theatre stage in France and Australia. Her musical theatre credits include Maria in The Sound of Music, and Nancy in Oliver, and she has created the title role in two world-premiere music theatre productions: Christina in Christina’s World and Heloise in Abelard and Heloise.
She is no stranger to the concert platform, having sung in more than 250 concert performances, including engagements with Opera Australia, the Lyon Opera Company, the Lyon Sinfonia; the New Caledonian School of Music; Opera Hunter; the Newcastle Cathedral Festival; the Newcastle Keyboard Festival; the Manly-Warringah Choir; the Nepean Choral Society; Opera on the Beach; Opera in the Valley; Opera in the Vineyards; Opera at the Winery; Lane Cove Music Society; Roseville Music Club; the Opera & Arts Support Group, the Sydney Youth Orchestra and of course, Sirens of Song!
Linda is much sought after as a performer of French repertoire. She has appeared Australia-wide for the Alliance Française, the French Consulate, the French Embassy, and most notably, for the French Navy (on their well-known officer-training vessel, the Joan of Arc). Linda has appeared in cabaret in popular venues such as the Side-On Café, LA Bar, Café Nine, the Australian National Arts Centre, the Powerhouse Museum, Café Niagara, Pepperinas and Pepper’s Guesthouse.
She is frequently asked to sing for events hosted by high-profile organisations including the Australian Conservation Foundation; the Children's Cancer Institute; the Lantern Club; the Music Teachers’ Association; the National Heart Foundation; the Quota Club; the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children and the Save the Children Fund.
Linda may be heard on recordings for Virgin, Decca, Warner and Radio France, and has featured in radio and television broadcasts for ABC-TV, ABC-FM, 2BL, 2NUR-FM, 2NC and 2RES.
