Profile

Born in Hungary Kornélia is an accomplished lyric soprano. In 1997 she graduated from the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy - Opera Faculty in Budapest with a Master’s Degree (Honours). In that year she was also a finalist in both the Placido Domingo Singing Competition in Tokyo and the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. In July 1997 she was invited to participate in the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo where she worked with Cristoph Eschenbach, Martin Isepp and Paul Sperry. In August of the following year Cristoph Eschenbach invited Kornélia to take part in the Ravinia Festival in Chicago where she worked with Peter Schreier, Thomas Allen, Roger Vignoles, Margo Garrett and Rudolph Piernay. In 1998-1999 she was the recipient of the French Government scholarship to the Ècole Normale de Musique de Paris working with Mme Edith Selig, where she was awarded a Diplome Concertist du Chant. In 2001-2002 she was again the recipient of a scholarship offered by the Italian Government to attend the prestigious G.Verdi Conservatorio di Milano working with Vittorio Terranova and Adele Bonay. That same year she continued her studies in the Conservatorio after receiving the Hungarian Government’s annual youth excellence scholarship.

She has participated in master classes with Dame Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge in Budapest, Katia Ricciarelli in Desenzano, Regine Crespin in Paris, and Renato Bruson, Julia Hamari, Anna Reynolds, Walter Berry, Walter C.Moore and Sylvia Sass in Budapest.
In 2002 Kornélia was engaged by the Hungarian State Opera House and became a member of its opera studio. At the same time she began to perform with the Hungarian State Opera. To date her on stage opera repertoire includes: Mimi – La Boheme, Lauretta – Gianni Schicchi, Cleopatra – Julio Cesare, Donna Anna – Don Giovanni, The Girl – Spinning room, Fatima – Abu Hassan, Nerina – Le Pescatrici, Flora – La Traviata, Chloe – The Queen of Spades, Tebaldo – Don Carlos, Papagena – The Magic Flute, Szulamith – Donath, Lola – Cavalleria Rusticana, Barbarina – Le nozze di Figaro, Gianetta – L’Elisire d’amore, Countess Ceprano – Rigoletto, Kate Pinkerton – Madama Butterfly.

Kornélia regularly performs with the MAV Symphonic Orchestra and the Hungarian Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra at the Matthias Church in Budapest where she sings Mozart: Requiem, Exsultate Jubilate, Krönungs-messe, Missa Brevis, Laudate Dominum, c-minor messe, Pergolesi:Stabat Mater, Händel:Messiah, Haydn:Creation, J.S.Bach: Christmas Oratorio and Vivaldi: Juditha Triumphans. Her repertoire ranges from Bach through to Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Goldmark, Debussy, Faure, Duparc as well as composers of the 20th Century such as Bartok, Kodaly and Britten.

Kornélia has toured extensively since 1997. She toured as a soloist in Japan - New Year’s Eve Concerts (1997, 2000 & 2003) and in the 2004 opera tour with the Hungarian State Opera. In Germany – New Year’s Eve Concerts including a number of operetta arias (2004). In Mexico - Solo recitals (2002, 2003 & 2006). In Spain – Concerts in Andalusia (2005) and in Thailand – Hungarian State Opera Tour (2005).


In 1996 Kornélia was honoured to sing a selection of Bartok’s songs for Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands on the occasion of the Royal visit to Hungary. In 2002 she sang for Mrs Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States of America at the American Embassy in Budapest. Kornélia is often invited to sing in the Hungarian Cultural Centre in London and on two occasions in the Cultural Centre in Paris. She has also performed at the Hungarian Embassy in London as well as the embassies of Norway, Great Britain, United States of America, Mexico and The Netherlands in Budapest.
